Lac La Belle


This most interesting book examines the life of Lac La Belle, which sits at the foot of Mount Bohemia in Keweenaw County.  As early as 1864, the wharf at Lac La Belle and its location on Lake Superior, proved valuable to the Village of Mendota, the mining village located in the middle of the Keweenaw Peninsula.  Quickly the valuable location was recognized as key for smelting the copper.  In 1881, the Conglomerate Mining Company started construction of the copper stamping mill at Lac La Belle.  Its mining history, to its resort capabilities and finally to the base of for the Mount Bohemia ski resort.
