Winona, a hamlet of Elm River Township, Houghton County, is located halfway between Houghton and Ontonagon. The Winona Mine operated from 1864 to 1928 and in its days of glory employed more than 300 people. In 1904, the King Philip Copper Company was formed on land contiguous to the Winona Mine.
